Katy Davies: The Welsh Language

2nd May 2025
—

This project celebrates the Welsh language as a vital part of cultural identity. It responds to the history of linguistic suppression by placing Welsh at the centre of its design and structure. The publication is bilingual, but the visual hierarchy gives prominence to Welsh, challenging the dominance of English and reflecting on power dynamics in language. Influenced by the goals of Cymraeg 2050, the project aims to support the future of Welsh through contemporary tools. Augmented Reality features support learning and pronunciation. It includes a custom typeface inspired by the letter forms found in early Welsh manuscripts, particularly the Mabinogi, combining historical references with modern typographic design to reflect both tradition and relevance.
